One of the several less visited mountain ranges in the Eastern Carpathians, the Tar-kő / Tarcău preserve a fine mix: half of their ridge has forest patches alternating with fine pastures dotted with wooden huts used by local people in summer while collecting the hay and keeping their cattle up there. On the other hand, the other half is wild, untrodden and hard to penetrate: it marked the Hungarian - Moldavian border until the Treaty of Trianon, but the border guard trails were abandoned afterwards. Other reasons that might have one visit the area are the fine traditions of the local people, many of which are ethnic Csángó, as well as wandering through a bucolic scenery, where life seems to have come to a stand still.
