Overshaded by the popular Bihor-Vlădeasa to the South (with their impressive karst scenery including the plethora of caves) and low (at almost 1000 m.a.s.l.), the Munții Șes / Réz-hegység (also known as the Munții Plopiș / Plopis-hegység) and the Munții Meseș / Meszes-hegység are the place to go for an out-of-this-world trek, walk or ride in anything but impressive a scenery. The extensive woods, the many clearings and pastures (yes, this comes together with many sheepfolds, some of which year round given the low elevation), as well as the many dirt roads or wide trails plying the crest make the two mountains a fine place to wander for a couple of days before ending with a visit to the Roman Fort at Porolissum, off Moigrad / Mojgrád, respectively a walk around the Wesselényi Castle and across the enchanting botanical gardens in Jibou / Zsibó. Whatever route you go, do not give in and start / end your kick in the convenient pass along the E81/DN1F, as you would miss a fine part of these mountains.
