As a friend once said: “a big heap of stones”. Well, yes, but these mountains also feature some beautiful lakes and a particularly interesting flora, especially in the forests to the North and West of the main ridge. Add here the fact that they host a few huts and are relatively easily accessible (by Romanian standards) and you will have a quite popular destination. This is why I usually go to the Retezat in autumn or winter. Please note that access to the national park is subject to a fee and camping is restricted to designated areas; find more information here (use an online translation tool to have the data in English). Also, all unauthorized access to the Gemenele - Radeșu scientific reserve is strictly prohibited. For ideas of cycling and trekking routes in these mountains and not only, refer to my GPS track page.
