A limestone ridge (a “geological accident”, as one of my friends, a geophysicist, used to say), the Piatra Craiului is one of those not-so-easy-to-forget ranges. The steep West wall and its narrow “Brâul de mijloc”, the endless rock climbing tracks and several unmarked trails used to be very popular until access beyond marked trails was forbidden and heavily charged. Also, please note that access to the national park is subject to a fee, with details here (use this link and have the text translated into English with a translation tool, as the English version does not provide complete data). Meanwhile, the Piatra Craiului remains for many local trekkers a landmark and its trails, especially those on and adjacent to the Northern ridge, are are very popular, especially during the weekend. For ideas of trekking routes in these mountains and not only, refer to my GPS track page.
