Tucked up in Northern Romania (and also stretching across the border into Ukraine), Bukovina hosts several relatively low hilly-like ranges that get rarely visited by strangers: the Obcine. Of these, the widest and better known ones are the three parallel ones running mainly from NW to SE: the Obcina Mestecăniș (also the highest one at 1588 m.a.s.l.), the Obcina Feredeu and the Obcina Mare. As with the rest of this mountain index, I shall take them in alphabetical order, commencing with the Feredeu which is something of a balance between the other two: it is neither the highest, nor the lowest, it is neither the most pasture-filled, nor the most wooden one. Instead it is about some of the finest trails in the Obcine, with cranberry, blueberry and blackberry bushes every now and then, as well as with far less dirt roads to cross or follow than the Mestecăniș. While the best thing to do in the three Obcine is to take an XC bike along the trails plying most of their ridges, if short on time or not being able to find an appropriate bike or to bring your own and need to choose, you might go for this one of the three; but then, every man with his own subjectiveness, isn’t it?
