Remote and definitely not standing out, the Latorița lie somewhat sandwiched between the Căpățânii and the Lotrului, West of Olt Valley. Not easily accessible if one is short on time, they provide a heterogeneous, quite unexpected scenery, where grassy, seemingly endless ridges are followed by rocky cliffs and 2000 m.a.s.l. peaks are separated by low, picturesque saddles. What’s more, the Latorița are followed by a dirt road built by the German army in 1916 (the so-called ‘Strategica’); it starts at the Gura Latoriței and goes all the way under Latorița Mountains’ highest peak (the Bora) to Ștefanu Saddle, where it meets the Transalpina, Romania’s highest paved road. Needless to say, these mountains are just perfect for cycling, apart from trekking. For ideas of cycling and trekking routes in these mountains and not only, refer to my GPS track page.
