Parallel to the main Eastern Carpathians ridge, the Harghita are easily overlooked when heading up North, to the higher Călimani or Rodna or more dramatic Hășmașul Mare / Nagy-Hagymás. However, these quite extensive mountains stretching for over 70 km. host a very interesting flora (including a couple of insectivore plants), some fine waterfalls, plenty of mineral springs and, maybe in the first place, long, remote trails just perfect when looking to leave it all behind and hit the road. Not least, a trek or - better for most parts - bike ride here can be combined with visiting some of the Székely villages and towns around. For ideas of trekking / cycling routes in these mountains and not only, refer to my GPS track page.
