Round, once mostly wooden (deforestation is nowadays a major issue up there, especially between Gutâi and Sâmbra Oilor passes) and dotted with clearings or sometimes even extensive pastures from place to place, these mountains lie in Northern Romania and are of volcanic origin. What makes them especially interesting is a rocky ridge known as Rooster’s Ridge (Ro. Creasta Cocoșului), which attracts quite a few rock climbers. I like them for the ridge too, but especially for what there is West of it and the road crossing them. Especially West and North of the Igniș peak area there is neither a marked trail (do not believe that old map), nor much of a human presence, other than when the tree cutters are around.
