Located in Western Romania and part of Apuseni Mountains, these highlands are about anything but elevation (even though they reach 1849 m. on Curcubăta Mare Peak). The great feature they have is the limestone ground where water erosion generated over 200 caves, sinkholes, vertical shafts, impressive gorges. Other than that, these mountains are great for easy trekking and extensive mountain biking, as they are criss-crossed by dozens of dirt roads and trails. The main North - South ridge can be done by foot or bike, also including a stop to do several loops through the karst area in the middle. For a biking route track in these mountains (that can also be done trekking), refer to my GPS track page. The last set of pictures, past the ‘Galbena Valley near Vârseci Cave’ have been shot along the above-mentioned route.
