Remote, even though there are other mountains way farther away from the beaten track than them. Extensive, even though one would not say so while traveling by train or car by their lower reaches. Unexpectedly challenging due to the dense vegetation, sometimes long or difficult access, or simply due to the lack of information and maps especially for their Northern half. Culturally rich, with the watermills in their Western part or heterogeneous population all around to mention but two reasons to visit. And, not least, there are the Danube Gorges creating their abrupt border to the South. One is given ample and enough reasons to visit the Almăj, I believe. For ideas of trekking and cycling routes in these mountains and not only, refer to my GPS track page. Cycling / trekking here can be continued in Semenic Mountains to the North.
