This route goes straight to the central part of the Danube Delta. Starting in Tulcea, it follows the Murighiol paved road to Nufărul and then, after crossing the Sfântul Gheorghe Branch, it goes along dirt roads to Gorgova. While I followed the tough right shore to Crișan (bush, dense forest walking or cycling), when in Gorgova one can also get a boat across the river (past the canal flowing into it from the North) and then follow the well kept trail there to Lebăda (formerly known as Baba Rada), when one can ask around for a boat and cross back on the right shore, to Crișan. From Crișan there is the 10 km. road to Caraorman including a ferry crossing across Caraorman Canal (there is nobody there usually, so wave a passing boat for a lift across) and then feel free to explore the forest at leisure. Back in Crișan (as there is no road or trail on East to Sulina), head across the river to Lebăda / Baba Rada and then stick to the trail along the river Westwards, to Mila 18, where you can turn North to the quiet and pleasant village of Mila 23. Then get a boat to take you to Stipoc and take the dirt road along the earth dam from there North, to Chilia Veche, after passing by the picturesque wooden convent worth visiting. From Chilia Veche turn West (no road Eastwards, towards Periprava), along the dirt road towards Tulcea, only that some 7 km. along the road stick to the dam trail SW and not to the trodden road that turns left, as the former is far more scenic and less dusty. You’ll eventually get to Tudor Vladimirescu, where a ferry or a speedboat can take you across the river, to Tulcea; keep the passport or ID in hand for the leg from Chilia Veche to Tulcea, as you will go along the border and border police checks are possible. One can break the ride in Crișan (or start it there), with Tulcea-bound ferries or fast boats stopping there; for the Navrom ferry there is a connection boat coming from Caraorman. Towards the end of the ride, one can get on a ferry from Chilia Veche if not willing to do the last stretch into Tulcea. There also runs a minibus from Chilia Veche to Tulcea (it starts in the afternoon). Note that, unlike Crișan ones, Chilia Veche ferries do not run daily. The route track is available on my dedicated page; it is 224 km. long and it took me almost 3 days to complete.
